Destination Europe

Destination Europeis a role-playing educational and training tool designed for groups of four to six participants. Over the course of 90 minutes, players take part in a detailed decision-making process focused on migration policies, representing different stakeholders whose interests may sometimes clash. The tool demonstrates how political decisions on migration can affect both migrants and communities in host countries. Destination Europewas developed by the European Migration Network (EMN).

The tool encourages discussion and critical thinking about the complexities of migration policymaking. Participants step into the roles of stakeholders involved in migration and integration issues at the EU, national, and local levels. Through evidence-based stories and research-driven scenarios, they explore the possible outcomes of migration policies for different groups, including refugees and asylum seekers, labour and irregular migrants, and citizens of EU member states where migrants settle.

Destination Europe is primarily intended for young people aged 16 and above. The tool has been tested by more than 490 participants, including university students, migration specialists, and individuals who work with or have an interest in issues related to migration and intercultural interaction.

This innovative educational and training resource enables teachers, youth workers, and others interested in migration topics to facilitate engaging discussions and learning activities with young people on migration-related issues.

Students have the opportunity to step into the roles of a minister, a European Commissioner, a mayor, or a representative of a non-governmental organisation and makе decisions that shape migration policies. Alongside discussion and debate, participants can deepen their understanding of migration issues.

Through the activity, players can:

      • Explore the complexity of migration-related decision-making at the EU, national, and local levels.

      • Understand the perspectives and interests of different stakeholders, including EU and national policymakers, civil society representatives, employers, migrant associations, and various groups of EU citizens.

      • Examine the possible effects of migration and integration policies on different categories of migrants, such as asylum seekers and refugees, irregular migrants, and labour migrants.

      • Strengthen important skills, including critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership.
